Male Infertility
Male infertility refers to difficulty conceiving due to factors affecting sperm production, function, or delivery. It contributes to roughly half of all cases where couples struggle to conceive, and many underlying causes are hormonal and treatable.
Possible causes
- low testosterone or other hormonal imbalances
- problems with sperm production or quality
- structural issues affecting sperm delivery
- lifestyle factors such as weight, smoking, and alcohol
- certain medications
Hormonal assessment
Male infertility assessment considers reproductive history, previous pregnancies, childhood or testicular problems, medicines, anabolic steroids, sexual function and appropriately timed hormone results. Semen analysis remains central and is usually repeated when abnormal because results vary.
Treatment and testosterone warning
Treatment depends on the cause and may include addressing medicines or lifestyle factors, treating a pituitary or hormonal disorder, fertility-directed hormone treatment in selected cases, or referral to urology and assisted-conception services. Testosterone replacement suppresses sperm production and should not be used as a fertility treatment.
UK-wide video consultations
History and result review can often take place securely by video, while examination, semen testing, ultrasound and fertility procedures require local or in-person services.
