Menstrual Disorders
Menstrual disorders cover a range of problems with the menstrual cycle, including periods that are irregular, unusually heavy, unusually light, absent, or associated with significant pain or other symptoms. Many, though not all, menstrual disorders have an underlying hormonal cause.
Common patterns and causes
- irregular periods, often linked to PCOS, thyroid disorders, or perimenopause;
- heavy periods, which can relate to hormonal imbalance;
- very frequent or infrequent cycles reflecting an underlying ovulation problem.
What we offer
- a detailed history of your cycle pattern and symptoms;
- blood tests to assess relevant hormones, same-day where appropriate;
- a clear plan addressing both the cause and your personal goals.
Hormonal assessment
Irregular, infrequent, heavy or absent periods can relate to pregnancy, PCOS, thyroid disease, prolactin disorders, menopause transition, weight change, exercise, stress, medicines or gynaecological conditions. Assessment reviews the bleeding pattern, associated symptoms, pregnancy possibility, medicines and appropriate blood or imaging results.
Treatment and when other care is needed
Treatment depends on the cause, bleeding severity, anaemia risk, fertility goals and need for endometrial protection. Some presentations require gynaecology rather than endocrine treatment. Very heavy bleeding with dizziness, fainting, severe pain or possible pregnancy requires urgent assessment.
UK-wide video consultations
History, hormone results and treatment planning can often be reviewed securely by video. Examination, pelvic ultrasound, pregnancy assessment and procedures are arranged locally when required.
