Pituitary MRI (Investigation Guide)

A pituitary MRI uses a magnetic field to produce high-resolution images of the pituitary gland and surrounding structures, without any radiation exposure. It is a key test for investigating pituitary tumours.

Why it's done

  • investigate hormone abnormalities
  • assess the size and position of a pituitary tumour
  • check whether a tumour is affecting the optic nerves

What we offer

  • a 30-45 minute scan, with earplugs or headphones provided for comfort
  • contrast dye used where needed for clearer images
  • results discussed at follow-up alongside your hormone blood tests

What the scan can show

Pituitary MRI provides detailed views of the pituitary gland and nearby structures. It can help identify an adenoma or other lesion, assess its size and relationship to the optic pathways and provide a baseline for follow-up. Small incidental changes are common and must be interpreted with symptoms and hormone results.

Preparing for the scan

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, kidney problems, implanted devices, metal fragments, severe claustrophobia or previous contrast reactions. Some scans use gadolinium contrast, but the radiology team decides whether this is appropriate. Follow the imaging provider’s instructions.

Results and UK-wide review

Results are considered alongside pituitary hormone testing and visual assessment where indicated. The report and images can usually be reviewed securely by video, while urgent visual symptoms or a sudden severe headache require immediate medical assessment.
