Thyroid Ultrasound (Investigation Guide)

A thyroid ultrasound is a painless, radiation-free scan that uses sound waves to create detailed images of the thyroid gland, most commonly used to assess thyroid nodules (lumps) or an enlarged thyroid (goitre).

Why it's done

  • characterise a thyroid lump or nodule
  • assess nodule features and likelihood of benign versus concerning findings
  • guide biopsy if needed
  • monitor a nodule or goitre over time

What the scan can show

The report may describe overall thyroid size and texture, the number and dimensions of nodules, whether they are solid or cystic, recognised ultrasound risk features and the appearance of nearby lymph nodes. Most thyroid nodules are benign; ultrasound helps identify which need no immediate action, surveillance or further assessment such as fine-needle aspiration.

Preparation and follow-up

Preparation is usually simple. Wear clothing that allows access to the lower neck and bring previous thyroid imaging or biopsy reports where possible. Not every benign-appearing nodule needs repeat scanning; follow-up depends on ultrasound grade, size, symptoms, growth and previous results.

UK-wide video review

The scan must be performed at an imaging facility, but the indication, report and next steps can be reviewed securely by video. Imaging can be arranged through Endocrine Consult where appropriate or coordinated with a suitable local provider.
